What lights you up? What do you really, really long to do with your time? What activities and interactions leave you feeling restored, fulfilled, and satisfied?
At the core of these activities and interactions lies the heartbeat of your purpose. The thump-thump of your personality, your gifts, your passions, and the people you’re meant to serve all lining up in one beautiful heart-muscle contraction and release of purpose-filled blood. Too medical? OK, I’ll calm down. Metaphors excite me.
I still want your answer to the question, though. What would flow out of your pen if I pushed you to sit down for ten minutes and just release some free-thinking brainstorms about your loves and longings? (If you’d like to try that exercise now, I’ll wait. Really.)
Additionally, I believe we spend far too little time in our devotional lives just basking in who we are as redeemed children of God and prayerfully asking him to tug at our hearts with calling, shine a gentle light on our gifts, and open our eyes to the opportunities all around us. How much we might miss if we’re not properly connected to the very source of our heartbeats!
Taking time to really identify how you long to spend your vocational time can work wonders for your outlook, for your motivation and drive, and for your sense of service and connection to those around you. As you dig into this reflective work, remember that there’s a difference between longing to spend time at the beach or dining at fancy restaurants and longing to teach, design, encourage, or manufacture. Your goal is to contemplate how you can serve the world with the best of who you are! Your “heartbeat” of purpose leads you to feel fulfilled, peaceful, and engaged.
Have you found it? Feel free to share your personal “heartbeats” in the comments below; sometimes it’s helpful to draw inspiration from those around us who are on fire for their own purposes! So, be a blessing to others who might be sorting through the complexities of purpose and share how you discovered your unique calling.
